FREWSBURG — In the first three quarters of the Frewsburg Holiday Tournament boys championship game Wednesday night, Hamburg connected on just two perimeter shots.

That’s not a misprint.

Then again, the Bulldogs didn’t take many attempts from deep, because they didn’t have to.

Layups and dunks worked just fine.

Adam Chiachia, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, poured in 24 points, 6-8 senior Benjamin Bill added 14 and 6-3 senior Evan Chaffee contributed 13 to lead Hamburg to an 84-47 victory over Frewsburg.

The win improved the Bulldogs’ record to 3-3, while the Bears fell to 3-4.

Thanks to its superior height, Hamburg built a comfortable lead from the start.

After Frewsburg’s Connor Murray opened the game with a 3-pointer, Hamburg finished the first quarter on a 27-8 run, highlighted by a pair of slams by Chaffee, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

By halftime, the Bulldogs led 39-22 and increased the margin to 67-33 after three periods. Ironically, Hamburg was a late addition to the tournament field and its first-round game against Gowanda on Tuesday had to be canceled, but the Class A school from Erie County showed little rust and a lot of nifty interior passing.

Zach Winters paced Frewsburg with 19 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots; Murray had 13 points, three steals and three assists; Jake Sears pulled down five boards; and Zack Carr collected four assists.

Joining Chaffee on the all-tournament team were teammates Chiachia and Ryan Gomolka; the Bears’ Winters and Murray; and North Collins’ Matt Sweet.

There was no consolation game.

Starting at $2.99/week.
