Jamestown High School’s cross country team hosted the inaugural 1-Mile Stampede this past weekend.

In the 1st and 2nd grade race, Paxon Hircko from Bemus Point Elementary was the overall winner and first male finisher in a time of 8:04, followed by Gavin Dietrich of Lincoln Elementary School and Ethan Carlson from Bemus Point Elementary. Hadley Anderson was the first female finisher with a time of 10:29.

In the 3rd and 4th grade race, Beckett Lumia from C.V. Bush Elementary was the overall winner and first male finisher in 7:25. Kater Hockenberry of C.V. Bush Elementary was second overall and the first female finisher in 7:52, followed by Journey Johnson of Bemus Point Elementary in third place.

The 5th and 6th grade race was dominated by all female runners with Avery Johnson of Southwestern finishing first overall with the fastest time of the day, 7:15. She was followed closely by second-place finisher Brooke Warner of Panama in 7:19 and Ellie Giltnan of Southwestern in 7:53.

With Avery Johnson’s fastest time of the day, she was awarded the “Rob Liebers Memorial Award.” Liebers was a huge supporter of all area runners and was also an accomplished runner himself. He recently lost his battle with cancer and will forever be missed by the running community he has helped so much. Rob truly believed everyone could be a runner with “a good pair of shoes and a pair of socks.”

The 1-Mile Stampede is dedicated to Rob’s memory with the hope that area youth will fall in love with running at a young age just like he did.
