I am writing to congratulate the Jamestown School Music Program in advance of their 100th Anniversary Concert on Saturday April 5 at the High School (4PM). For 100 years, the Music program has inspired students and has brought fame/pride to the Jamestown community.
I know because my father, Charles L. Jacobson (“Jake”), was Band Director and head of the Jamestown music department in the 50’s and 60’s before becoming JHS Principal and then Assistant Superintendent of Schools. I was a member of the Band/Orchestra in the 60’s and have continued my love of music ever since – I still have a bassoon. Over the years, many thousands of Jamestown Students have also had their lives enriched by the many dedicated music teachers!
The Jamestown School Music Program has provided the opportunity for students to widen their horizons and work toward a goal, both as a team and individually. Also, students have had the opportunity to perform all over the country, including prestigious events such as:
– Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and Hamilton TigerCats half time shows at televised professional football games. Also, at all JHS football/basketball games and Town Parades.
– Many Trips and Parades e.g., New York City; Orange Blossom Festival in Washington, DC; and several Disney World Parades/events in Orlando, FL.
– Mid-West Music Clinic in Chicago (Band), Mid-East Music Clinic in Pittsburgh (Orchestra); and Concerts at many High Schools en route. Also, annual local competitions.
– Alumni have become members/sponsors of Symphony Orchestras, members of US Military Bands, Music Teachers (including several Jamestown HS Band Directors). and supporters of local music organizations nationwide.
Although I live in Connecticut, I continue to work closely with Meghan Murray and the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation (CRCF) which manages a Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of my Father and Mother (“Fund”). Since established in 2015, the Fund has granted over $30,000 of Scholarships to JHS music students for summer music camps, college tuition, and private music instruction. Annual scholarships to JHS students will continue indefinitely. Contributions to the Fund to support JHS music students are welcome at CRCF.
Finally, I want to thank Meghan Murray, JHS alumnus and current Director of Bands, and the many music teachers (and administrators/residents) for supporting and carrying on the proud music tradition In the Jamestown Public Schools – I know my Father would be proud. To the Jamestown Music Students – take advantage of your JHS music experience and “keep on playing”.
I look forward to seeing many friends and fellow JHS alumni on April 5. Congratulations!!
