When Is Vandalism Appropriate?

Readers' Forum

To The Reader’s Forum:

I agree with the P-J editorial that the vandalism at Rep. Nick Langworthy’s office is unacceptable, and I get it that the Congressman is upset about it.

He’s right that these crimes have no place in our political discourse, and that the perpetrators should be prosecuted.

I have to ask though, how is it that he could support the pardons that President Trump granted to perpetrators of the January 6th insurrection? He’s quoted as saying “the whole episode was mishandled and abuse in the courts” and that “The president just wanted to put it behind him.” It does seem that a jammed door pales in comparison to rioters breaking into the capital, assaulting law enforcement officers, smashing windows, defecating on the floor, stealing property and causing nearly $3 million in damage, the vast majority which has been paid for by us, the taxpayers. I realize he wasn’t in office that day, so maybe it doesn’t have a great impact on him personally.

I also agree that it is very frustrating that the Congressman is not available publicly. It would be nice to have a town hall meeting where the public is welcome. Given his popularity in the county, it would likely be a mostly supportive crowd. I don’t know how the vandals knew that his office would be unattended, his schedule is not published on his website. The only way to communicate your concerns to the congressman is by calling his office, writing a letter or sending an email, all of which will be responded to by his staff, not him. Nevertheless, if you have something to say, give it a try.
