Is Gateway Lofts A Good Use Of Money?

Readers' Forum

To The Reader’s Forum:

I was reading in The Post-Journal on a recent trip back home that the old Chautauqua Hardware was going to be converted into low income housing.

Well as I read the article I noticed something no one has commented on and I find that odd. Yes it would be nice to help the lower income have a nice place to live, yes it would be nice to make a good use of an old building. But at $87,000,000, no, it is way to costly. Folks that’s $790,000 plus per apartment.

I believe this is the kind of waste that needs to stop. Then more than likely it will become a Section 8 building which means the federal government pays a guaranteed rent that is double or more then the average rent in the Jamestown market. You get the land and build nice two bedroom homes for $50,000. Can’t be done? Well, right now 84 Lumber has a two bedroom home kit for less than $25,000 add labor and a foundation and your still under $50,000.

I have plans into building a home in Falconer. Yes, its a two bedroom modern style home, Yes I will be doing 90% of the work, but with the land purchase I will be around $50k.

Do people not understand why taxes are so high? This is a very reason. Did your home cost $790,000? Do you think you could sell your home for that amount? Then, not to put more on the plate, the Second Street project cost at its time around $375,000 per unit. Do you think that was a good idea? I see blight and darkness around that area and do not believe that should have ever been built.

People, raise up, wake up and make it known this has to stop. And this is small potatoes to how they waste the tax dollars.
