Route 394 Sidewalks Shouldn’t Be A Done Deal

We’re heartened to see that the state Transportation Department is taking the concerns of Lakewood residents to heart as it plows ahead with plans for sidewalks along Route 394.

The original project involved installing sidewalks on both sides of Route 394 from Elmcrest Avenue on the south side and from Shadyside Avenue on the north side to Route 474. The original project would have required 155 property rights of way adjustments, utility pole relocations, and the removal of about 163 trees when construction started in 2027.

Village residents have voiced their opposition, and the DOT is listening – a little – by reconfiguring the project, including installing sidewalks on only one side of Route 394. Lakewood Mayor Randy Holcomb said another informational meeting may be held.

This project has generated enough discussion that, in our view, another informational meeting should be held by the DOT to see if a downsized project lessens public opposition. That should be a requirement, not a possibility.

Even more important, however, is Holcomb’s feeling that a project is happening, with the only wiggle room being the scope of the project.

“We are getting it (the plan) down to where it is, hopefully the best we can have it, because it’s going to happen, whether you, me or anybody doesn’t want it,” Holcomb said during last week’s Village Board meeting.

We remember well last year’s DOT plan to put Second Street on a road diet by eliminating street parking and installing bike lanes. That proposal was opposed by the City Council and eventually removed from the East Second Street project that will take place in the city. So, not all DOT projects are set in stone. A precedent has been set.

The DOT should present the smaller project to Lakewood residents and get their reaction to it. Then a decision can be made whether or not sidewalks should be included.

Starting at $2.99/week.
