Sawyer J. Scoma

Sawyer J. Scoma
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved son, Sawyer Jaxson Scoma who gained his wings on Monday April 21, 2025. Sawyer was surrounded by his parents and many loved ones, after a lifelong illness.
Sawyer was born on May 29, 2017, in Jamestown, NY. At six weeks old he was transferred to Golisano Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension and Scimitar Syndrome. Finally on April 6, 2018, we were able to bring our boy home. Sawyer may have been trach- and ventilator-dependent, but he never let that get in his way. Sawyer was a true miracle who defied all odds and continued to impress everyone with his strength and resilience.
His smile could light up the room and his laugh could melt the hearts of those around him. Though he never spoke a word, his voice and thoughts could always be heard.
Sawyer loved watching Cocomelon on his tablet, many Disney movies, listening to 80s rock, Gracie’s Corner, riding around on his swivel car, playing on the swings, the teeter-totter at Southwestern school, going to Midway Park, looking at his books before ripping them to shreds, getting tickled by daddy and having dance parties with mama. He continued to impress us by showing us how smart he was and always knew how to get his way.
Sawyer leaves behind many wonderful caregivers that provided love and support that enhanced his quality of life. His homecare nurses became a second family, Morgan Johnson, Andrea Tibbitts, Danielle Conroe, Autumn Edson, Michelle Vaughn, Sydnie Wilkinson, Ashton Bird, Amy Carmen, Heather Dyke, Olivia Pavlock, and Jeannie Chapman. His entire team at Golisano 6 South that never gave up on him gave us the blessing of being able to bring him home. As well as the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester, NY who took such great care of Sawyer and his parents during all of his hospitalizations. We appreciate every person that came into his life that gave us the time and experiences we were able to have with him. We’d also like to thank everyone who showed their love support for Sawyer and his family throughout his special journey.
Sawyer is survived by his loving parents, Jim and Shannon Scoma of Lakewood NY; brother Dominick Scoma; paternal grandparents Diane and Kenny Mathews of Lakewood NY; maternal grandparents Brian and Karen Hildom of Kennedy; uncles Tom (Renee) Scoma, Tim (Lina) Scoma, and Andrew Hildom; Aunt Kerrie (Kevin) Martin of Athens, GA; and cousins Natalya, Gabryella, Isabella, Aria, Connor, Huck, Dominic, Kiah, and Austin.
He will be joining his maternal great- grandparents, Ed and Linda Edwards; Gerald and Patricia Hildom; Maternal Great Uncle, Charles Hildom; and paternal great-grandparents Michael and Irene Constantino on his next journey.
With Sawyer’s passing, we remind others that his life is one to be celebrated. His ability to smile and remain happy even with all the challenges he faced can be a lesson for us all. Although we will miss him every day, he will forever remain in our hearts.
The funeral will be held at 12 pm on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in The Lind Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 pm on Friday in the funeral home.
