Richard W. Nelson Sr.
Richard W. “Dick” Nelson Sr. of 136 Aldren Ave., formerly of 222 Indiana Ave., passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025, in UPMC Chautauqua.
He was born on Sept. 18, 1931, in Jamestown, the son of the late Walter and Eleanor Anderson Nelson.
A veteran of the Korean War he served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956.
He worked at the former Field and Wright Company as Executive Vice President from 1961-83 when Raymour and Flanigan purchased the business in 1983. He finished out his remaining working years at Jamestown Metal Products until his retirement in 1993.
His memberships include Pilgrim Memorial United Church of Christ, life member of Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, member of Viking Lodge IOV 65 since 1948 and former member of the Chautauqua Lake Antique Car Club.
Born with a great sense of humor, he enjoyed helping people, golfing, and restoring and enjoying antique cars however, more than anything he loved visiting his sons, and their families, and playing golf with them. He was very proud of the work ethic and accomplishments of both his sons. He often talked about the special bond and love he had for his brother, Bruce.
Dick volunteered for RSVP and Lutheran Social Services and events at the Rod & Gun Club. He was very passionate about working and volunteering for Bunkers in Baghdad, a nonprofit charity that sent new and used golf clubs, and golf balls to our men and women serving in Iraq, and Afghanistan. As of Oct. 3, 2024; Dick cleaned and shipped 524,742 golf balls, 21,879 golf clubs and raised/donated $19,699.63.
Surviving are two sons Richard Nelson Jr. of South Windsor, CT, and Jeffrey Nelson of Longmeadow, MA; two grandchildren Vanessa Nelson and Alex Nelson; step-granddaughter Allie (Michael) Hoadley and a brother Bruce (Wenda) Nelson of Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his wife Donna Anderson Nelson, whom he married Oct. 12, 1957, and who died Nov. 23, 2022.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
