Duane Westerburg
Duane (Dewey) Westerburg, 85, of Frostproof, Fl, and Bemus Point, N.Y., went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 2, 2025. A native of Jamestown N.Y, he was born Jan. 15,1940. He was the son of the late Emil and Jessie Custer Westerburg. He was a 1958 graduate of Jamestown High School and was employed by Pepsi Cola Bottling Plant for 27 years. In earlier years he had worked for Crescent Tool Company for 18 years. He was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance church for 40 years, taking his membership to the Bemus Point United Methodist Church when moving to Bemus Point. He attended the First Baptist Church in Frostproof, where he sang in the church choir, and was a baritone in a Southern gospel quartet called the ROMS, (retired Old Men Singers). The last 10 years, Dewey was a member of the South Lake Wales Church of God and sang in Dr. Darr’s choir. One of the biggest thrills was when he sang in the back up choir for Bill Gaither, under the direction of Dr. Steven Darr. He played in the first game at Bergman Park for the Moose Club, the first year Little League played in Jamestown. He played three years of Babe Ruth, played football for Jamestown High School for three years. He was an avid sports fan. He was a Member of the Southwestern N.Y. Football Association for 30 years, retiring in 1990. Dewey served as Vice President and then President for one term each. He was a member of the Viking Lodge #65 and also an associate member of the War Vets. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Kathleen Frankson Westerburg, whom he married Aug. 15, 1959; two daughters, Cheri Nichols of Cordele, Ga., and Jeannine Sikora of Montour Falls, N.Y.; four grandchildren, all of whom called him Papa, Justin and Jessie Nichols of Cordele, Ga., and Kaci Sikora of Elmira, N.Y, and Brooke Sikora of Montour Falls, N.Y. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, E. Eugene Westerburg, who died Nov., 17, 2004, and a son-in-law, J. Curtis Nichols who died Aug. 8, 2024, and an infant sister. A memorial will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11 A.M. at the South Lake Wales Church of God. Memorials may be made to the South Lake Wales Church of God, 210 Presidents Drive Lake Wales, Fl., or charity of choice.
