Joy Leonard

Joy Carpenter Leonard, 89, of Frewsburg, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Monday, Feb. 24, 2025 in Greenville, SC

Joy was born on March 11, 1935 in Warren, PA, daughter of the late Avery D. and Lillian I. Siggins Carpenter.

A 1952 Graduate of Jamestown High School, Joy married her late husband, Freeman R. Leonard in 1955 and went on to work her way up through the ranks at Chase Bank from teller to Branch Manager while raising her 3 boys. Her sharp intellect and warm demeanor earned her the admiration of colleagues and clients alike.

Beyond her professional achievements, Joy’s heart was always with her family and community. Her volunteer work at Myers Memorial Library and the former Relief Zone Thrift shop was a testament to her belief in the power of knowledge and the importance of community service. Rare was the occasion when either she or Freeman were absent from one of her boy’s activities.

Retiring early allowed her to travel with friends and family in both the United States and in Europe. She loved garage and household sales, quilting, sewing, hiking and landscaping her home. She took particular delight in her chance to indulge in some line dancing or Bingo with her old classmates and friends.

As we bid farewell to Joy Leonard, we celebrate the indelible mark she has left on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

She is survived by her three sons Steven Leonard of Jamesville, NY, Gregg Leonard of Easley, SC, and Jay Leonard of Greenville, SC; three grandchildren Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Samuel; sister Karen Carpenter Foose; half-sister Marlene Starling, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman Aug. 30, 2015, her father Avery, mother Lillian Vizzolini and cousin Roger Siggins.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date and will be announced by the Peterson Funeral Home in Frewsburg, NY.

Memorials may be made to Myers Memorial Library, 26 Ivory St., Frewsburg, NY 14738.
