Gay Huggard

Gay Huggard
Gay Huggard transitioned peacefully on Friday, March 14, 2025, in her hometown of Jamestown, NY, surrounded by love. Born and raised in Jamestown, Gay’s life journey was marked by compassion, service, and a deep love for family and community.
After graduating from the Jamestown Business School, Gay began her professional career at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. She later moved to the Bay Area of California, where she built a life with her husband, George Huggard, who preceded her in death in 2003.
Gay was also predeceased by her parents, Iris Crawford Johnson (2013) and William Edward Johnson (2015), and her younger sister, Lynne Marie Johnson (2009).
She is survived by her sister, Diane Peterson, and her brother, David Johnson, along with a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cherished family friends whom she nurtured as her own.
Following her husband’s passing, Gay relocated to Connecticut to be near her sister Lynne, her niece Stacey Brown, and grand-niece Makenna Lindsay. There, she found purpose working with at-risk youth and offering guidance and encouragement to many. In 2016, she returned to Jamestown, where she remained active in the community and deeply involved in the Blackwell AME Zion Church. Gay’s vibrant presence was a constant at family holiday gatherings and “cousins’ lunches,” where laughter and love were always in abundance.
A passionate traveler, Gay visited Israel, Egypt, Spain, France, the Caribbean, and many U.S. states throughout her life — always curious, always seeking to understand and experience more of the world.
A Homegoing Service will be held on Monday, April 7, at 1:00 p.m. at Blackwell AME Zion Church in Jamestown, with a repass to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer organization in Gay’s honor (www.komen.org; 1-877-GO KOMEN).
Home; Susan G. Komen addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts in order to make the biggest impact against this disease.
Her vibrant spirit, unwavering strength, and boundless love will be remembered always.
