Craig A. Rubner

Craig A. Rubner

SHERMAN-Craig A. Rubner, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on March 1, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 68 years old.

A gifted craftsman, he had a rare ability to bring ideas to life with his hands, always inventive and endlessly creative. Whether building, fixing, or dreaming up something new, he put careful thought into every project, ensuring that no detail was overlooked. His work was never rushed–each piece was made with the kind of precision and skill that only comes from a lifetime of doing things the right way (his way). But Craig’s skills weren’t just for himself–he used them to help others without hesitation and without ever expecting anything in return. If something was broken, he’d fix it. If someone needed a hand, he was there.

Beyond his craftsmanship, he was the most loving grandfather, cherishing every moment spent with his grandchildren and leaving them with memories filled with adventure, laughter, and wisdom. For his grandkids, the answer was never no–especially if it involved making a mess, catching crayfish, getting into a little bit of harmless trouble, or learning how to drive (whether in a full-size vehicle or in Grandpa’s golf cart turned ’57 Chevy).

Craig was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Deleeo (Brougham) Rubner; his brother Fritz Rubner; his sister Mary Holloway; and his good friend Tim “Otis” Moorehead.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Laurie (Phelps) Rubner; his daughter Kelly Thornton (Andrew Sutter) of Sherman, NY, and her children, Kaylee Johnson (Nathan), Carter Thornton (Kaylee Hodge), and Kendra Thornton; and his daughter Amy Folsom (Greg) and their children, Dakota, Mila, and Caleb of Valrico, FL.

He also leaves behind his brothers Paul Rubner (Debbie) of Winter Haven, FL, and Dean Rubner of Ridge Manor, FL; his sisters Marla Murdock (Dale) of Sherman, NY, and Jan Birchfield (Bobby) of Zephyrhills, FL; as well as many nieces, nephews, and in-laws who loved him dearly. His siblings shared in his life’s journey with love, laughter, and more than a few stubborn debates. His nieces and nephews will always remember him as the uncle who could fix anything and always had a story to tell. His family will carry on the lessons he taught them–like how to work with their hands, appreciate a well-done project, and never pass up the chance to cause a little mischief.

In honor of his generous spirit, donations can be made to Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care, who provided amazing care for him and his family as well as Small Town Shelter, his daughter’s animal rescue, which he was deeply invested in helping establish and keep running. Both organizations reflect his kindness and care for others.

A celebration of life will be held on July 26, 2025, from 1-4 p.m. at 142 Kipp St., Sherman, NY, to honor and remember Craig, sharing the stories, laughter, and love that made him who he was.
