Rodney H. Sager

It is with regret we announce the passing of Rodney H. Sager, 94, of Jamestown, passed away Saturday February 15, 2025, at UPMC Chautauqua. An amazing Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, Grandfather, great Grandfather, great-great Grandfather and neighbor.

He was born on March 20, 1930, in Hamlet, NY, the son of Lyle and Grace Hemphill Sager.

Rodney was a 1948 graduate of South Dayton High School and continued his education at Cornell University attending milk testers school and cattle artificial insemination course.

Before his retirement he worked at Eastern A.I. Cooperative, Inc. for over 30 years perfecting his trade of artificial insemination. In his earlier years he was a Dairy Herd Information Supervisor, collecting milk samples and other data from area farms. Owner of Cree’s Grocery in Busti, NY and a grocery store in Chautauqua Institution within the Colonnade Building. Following his retirement, he worked at The Post Journal as a Shortage Relief Driver. Most recently he volunteered at UPMC Chautauqua as a Patient Escort.

Rod and Shorty traveled the Eastern US for years in their motorhome during the winter months, and spent time camping during the summer months at local campgrounds. Years were spent bowling Friday nights at Sugar Bowl in Sugar Grove, PA with of course a few beers and dancing in the Busti area. Rodney enjoyed his time with his family, a hearty meal, red wine and a good book. He actively traded stocks up until his passing. He cherished his neighbors (Steve and Nancy Benson, Joe Conti, Pat Ruttenbur and Eric Livengood) who so graciously helped keep track of him and more than once shoveled him out so he could get to Horton’s, which was a must every day. We believe it was a pretty special day reuniting with Shorty after 20 years apart.

Surviving are his children: Roxanne (James Herron) Meredith of Ashville, Sheila (Peter) Hyde of Ashville, Rodney Sager of Ashville, and Bob (Manal) Sager of Buford Georgia; his 7 grandchildren: Christopher (Angela) Meredith, Nicole (Jon) Neubauer, Jessica (Marc) Carraher, Lacey Hyde, Christa (Elmo) Morgan, Casandra (Mike) Anderson, and Ashley (Javon) Hansraj; 15 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. His brother Alvin (Helen) Sager of Brocton, a cousin Geraldine Yauchzy of Falconer and many nieces and nephews throughout the US.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Luella (Shorty) Farrar Sager whom he married in 1954 and who died in 2005, his parents and his sisters Rachel Scholar and Ada Carol Zahm.

In keeping with Rodney’s wishes, no formal service or visitation will be observed. A Celebration of Life will be announced by the family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a donation of choice.
