Michael Steven Hargis

Michael Steven Hargis
Michael Steven Hargis finished his lengthy battle with an aggressive illness on February 23, 2025. He fought this illness with an inspirational amount of tenacity.
Mike was born on October 10, 1959, in Bay Village, Ohio. He grew up in Brook Park, Ohio and attended high school at Midpark, graduating in 1978. He spent many summers in Bemus Point with his family, instilling a love for Chautauqua Lake.
He started his career as a pipe fitter at Master Mechanical in Cleveland, Ohio. After moving to Bemus Point in his 20s, he became a member of the Local 22, which he was a part of for 40 years. In addition, he was an accomplished ski instructor for many years at Peek’n Peak ski resort. He also thoroughly enjoyed being an involved member of the Chautauqua Lake Power Boat Club for 10+ years.
Mike was a man who thrived on routine and took pride in getting the job done right the first time. He took great delight in teachable moments and sharing his extensive knowledge: from plumbing to boating and of course, smoked meat. He also had an affinity for a well-timed pun, hoping to induce a laugh (or a groan) from his captive audience. He cherished his memories with Debbie and the boys, from Harry Potter or 007 marathons to skiing the slopes.
Mike’s greatest joy for the last five years has been his grandson, Theo. Though their memories together will be cut short, grandpa’s love has made a permanent imprint on Theo’s heart. Their special bond will be treasured forever.
Mike is survived by his wife Debra, and his sons Christopher Hargis (Ashley) and Garrick Zibreg; grandson Theodore Hargis; “adopted” daughter Charlotte Withington (Dan); stepmother Margaret “Peg” Hargis; sister Anita Malena (Tim); brothers Douglas Hargis (Mary), James Hargis and Brian Hargis. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Henry “Hank” Hargis.
The funeral will be held at 11am Monday March 3, 2025, at St Timothy Lutheran Church. Friends will be received an hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 am at church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care, 20 W Fairmount Ave, Lakewood, NY 14750.
