Louis Eugene Rieg
Louis Eugene Rieg, 94, of Ashville, NY passed away February 10, 2025. His daughter, Gretchen, was at his side.
He was born July 25, 1930 to parents, Eugene K Rieg and Elsie Pearson Rieg in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Louis graduated from Warren High School in Warren, PA in 1948. In addition to playing trombone for the Warren Dragons, he worked at a local bakery, then a pharmacy in the soda shop. Louis attended the University of Notre Dame where he played trombone for the Fighting Irish and met his future wife at the Senior Ball. He married Christine Bernadette Barnes on December 29, 1956.
Louis is survived by his son Mark (Theresa) Rieg, daughter Gretchen (Lane) Parker, 5 grandchildren: Ricky Jervah, Jennifer Jervah, Joshua (Rebecca) Rieg, Catricia (Onana) Atangana, and Cassandra Rieg, plus 4 great grandchildren: Freddy Lamb, Christine Lamb, Ophelia Rieg, Nolan Atangana, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Louis was preceded in death by his son Damian Rieg, his sister Eleanor Brown, wife Christine Barnes Rieg, and infant granddaughter Victoria Rieg.
Louis was employed as a geologist at Gulf Oil which took the family to Pittsburg, PA; New Orleans, LA, twice; Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa, twice; and Casper, WY. Louis retired to Lakewood, NY and had a second career doing property evaluation assessments in different New York counties.
Louis enjoyed square dancing, gardening, reading, sailing, the Visual and Performing Arts as well as traveling the world. Louis served on the School Boards for Christ the King School in Gretna, LA and Holy Family Catholic School in Jamestown, NY. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Lakewood, NY, as a lecturer, kitchen help for several spaghetti dinners, movie nights, and parish picnics. He was a co-recipient of the St. Joseph the Worker Award along with Christine.
A viewing will be held at Riccardi’s Hubert Funeral Home in Jamestown, NY Sunday, February 16 from 2 to 5 PM.
Louis will be honored with a Mass at 10 AM Monday, February 17 at Sacred Heart Church, Lakewood, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Lucille Ball Little Theater.
