James “Jim” Currie Jr.
James “Jim” Currie Jr. passed away in his Garfield Road home, Jamestown, NY, on January 7, 2025, with his family nearby. He was 100 years old.
Born on November 3, 1924, to James and Jessie Currie of Jamestown, James is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Andrew (Doris), and his wife of 56 years, Marilyn Stewart Currie. He is survived by his daughter Laurie Proia of NY, his son Kevin (Katherine) of NC, his daughter Bonnie Fish of FL, his son Scott (Lisa) of Virginia, eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, numerous extended family members, and many friends. James also leaves behind his long-time friend Nancy Schuyler.
A WWII Centenarian James was born in Jamestown, graduated from Jamestown High School, and entered the United States Navy. As part of the 4th Naval Construction Battalion in the Seabees leaving Pearl Harbor in 1944, James went to Guam where he worked on construction projects before moving to Okinawa. He achieved the rank of Fireman First Class and, upon his return, was a member of the Henry Mosher American Legion Post 638 in Falconer for more than 50 years.
Upon discharge from the US Navy, James returned to Jamestown where he was employed by Art Metal, Marlin Rockwell and Blackstone. At Blackstone he was part of the research and design team. James retired from Blackstone in the 1980s.
In his youth, he had a passion for motorcycles and cars leading to skills he used as a machinist and, later, as a tool and die maker. His hobbies included restoring vehicles, sky diving and scuba diving. An avid reader of the Holy Bible and history, he enjoyed learning about new places, traveling within the United States, being in the outdoors and also watching birds. After his retirement, he spent several summers as a camp host at Hamlin Beach State Park. When he was 84 years old, he hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
A witty and faithful man, James never met a stranger and made friends wherever he went. The family greatly appreciates his devoted nurse Jennifer Roller and the compassionate professional caregivers who provided the care James needed to remain in his home until his death.
A May 3, 2025 service to honor James will be held at 1:00 pm at Lind Funeral Home in Jamestown, NY, with a reception to follow at the Henry Mosher Post 638 American Legion located in Falconer, NY.
