Ethel R. DeMaio

Ethel R. DeMaio, 91, passed away early Sunday morning, Jan. 12, 2025 in her home on Avalon Blvd. in Jamestown.

Ethel was the widow of Cosmo M. DeMaio whom she married July 22, 1950 and who passed away April 6, 2022.

A lifelong are resident, she was born in the family home on the corner of Fairmount and Robinson Avenues in West Ellicott on May 21, 1933, one of three children of the late Tella A. and Beatrice E. Hammersmith Yasher.

A student at Celoron High School and graduate of Southwestern, Ethel was employed at the former Davis Drug Store on Fairmount Ave. for 40 years from 1952 to 1992. She belonged to the Herman Kent American Legion Auxiliary, AARP, and Busti Church of God.

Ethel enjoyed working on her landscaping and gardening, as well as watching sports on TV, specifically football, NASCAR and golf.

Surviving are a son, Robert (Jenny) DeMaio of Lakewood and daughter, Susan (George) Witruke of Busti; four grandsons: Michael (Brooke) and Benjamin DeMaio of Columbus, IN, and Ezekiel and Cosmo Witruke of Jamestown; and seven great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Kendall, Atticus and Mila DeMaio of Columbus, IN, and Kayla, Stella and Maxx Witruke of Busti.

Along with her parents and her husband Cosmo, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gilbert Yasher who was killed during World War II, and Marvin Yasher who died in 2011.

A private family service will be held. Visitation will not be observed. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
