Mary D. Shearman
Mary D. Shearman, 94, of Westfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Absolut Care of Westfield. She was born December 5, 1930, to the late Richard P. and Mary Mossman Shearman.
An area resident most of her life, Mary graduated from Jamestown High School in 1950 and went on to attend Jamestown Business College. She was employed at the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau for two decades and retired from Welch Foods in Westfield as an information clerk after 18 years.
A devout Catholic, Mary was a parishioner of St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church, serving on both the altar guild and the rosary society.
Profoundly, Mary was a direct decedent of Silas Shearman who was monumental in the historic Underground Railroad. This familial connection to history kept Mary invested in both the Valley Historical Society as well as the Fenton Historical Society. The Jamestown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution also called Mary a member.
As an ode to her personal interests, Mary also belonged to the Westfield Quilters Guild and the Lake Erie Bird Club.
Mary leaves behind seven children: George “Chip” (Donna) Schroeder IV of Salt Lake City, UT; James “Jay” (Joellen) Schroeder of Tampa, FL; Elizabeth (Tom) Tarpley of Westfield, NY; Katherine Schroeder of Dade City, FL; Christopher Schroeder of Hudson, OH; Mary (Ivan) Dean of Coral Springs, FL; and Richard Schroeder of Westfield, NY; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her two sisters: Suzanne Shearman Osmer of Massachusetts and Catherine Shearman Barone of Jamestown, NY.
A memorial service for Mary will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 418 Spring Street, Jamestown, NY 14701, or to the Jamestown Chapter of the DAR ‘Good Citizen Award,’ 70 Prospect Street, Jamestown, NY 14701.
