Joseph J. “Joe” Lisciandro
Joseph J. “Joe” Lisciandro, 89, of Jamestown, NY, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 10, 2024, after a courageous six-month battle with cancer. He took his last breaths surrounded by his loving wife and children. The son of the late Giovanni and Concetta (nee Ferrara, Gioia) Lisciandro, Joe was born in Marianopoli, Sicily, Province of Caltanissetta on April 15, 1935.
Joe attended grade school in Sicily, Italy, speaking Italian while also learning English as a second language. The United States proudly became Joe’s home on December 8, 1950, when, at the age of 15, Joe, his mother, and his younger brother, Sam, immigrated to unite with his father.
A picturesque first date on New Year’s Day in 1955 changed Joe’s world. He and his beloved wife, Carol, fell for one another and never looked back. They were married October 20, 1956, at St. John’s Catholic Church and have been devoted to one another with their faiths at the center of their marriage ever since.
Invested depicts Joe’s every membership and hobby throughout his years. He was a member of Holy Apostles Parish, St. John’s Church, immediately upon immigrating to Jamestown, serving as an usher for 68 years. Moreover, he founded the Catholic Bocce League, during which he was instrumental in recruiting and organizing, let alone being the driving force behind building the courts on the St. John’s grounds.
A past President of the Italian Quadriglia Dancers, Joe nobly held onto the truth that he was a member of the original group; additionally, he was a member of the Catholic Celtics Club and the Marco Polo Club.
Joe markedly attended Jamestown High School and studied wholeheartedly to earn his GED Diploma in 1973. This honor was a distinguished accomplishment for Joe.
Forever a hard-working laborer, Joe was employed by Marlin Rockwell, Chautauqua Hardware, Art Metal, Fashion Clothes, and Joe Lanzo’s Service Station. He retired from Morgan Linen Services in 1997 after 24 committed years.
The Lakewood Rod & Gun Club knew Joe as a loyal member for years, as did the Lakewood American Legion. So, too, he was a member of the IAM Machinist Union Lodge 1559 Teamster Local 946 as well as president of the Monday Senior Bowling League at Jamestown Bowling Company. His zest for sports could always be recognized in his dire support of both the NY Giants and the NY Yankees.
Joe treasured coffee with his coffee buddies and staying active through bowling, bocce, and swimming. Endless playing card hands were dealt with friends while he always made time to tend to his yard and gardens. Joe and Carol spent many an evening dining at the Rod & Gun Club, only to be followed by joyous dancing to the beats of live bands.
A monumental loss will most certainly be felt by the Jamestown Knights of Columbus Council #926. Ardently, Joe was a 25-year member, serving as a member of the 4th Degree Assembly and Color Guard. He also served as Deputy Grand Knight, Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator and, most recently, as Trustee.
Above all, Joe valued his family, cherishing nothing more than time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his treasured wife of 68 years, Carol Gullotti Lisciandro; four children: Diana (Randall) Graham of Lakewood, Rita (Rob) Newell of Jamestown, John Lisciandro of Jamestown, and Carl (Dawn) Lisciandro of Jamestown; eleven grandchildren: Christopher (Roseanne Ficken) Graham, Adam (Chelsea Chard) Graham, Robert (Kelly) Newell, Nicholas (Lindsay) Lisciandro, Gina (Gavin) Cooper, Andrew Lisciandro, Tiffany (Kristien Olson) Borst, Michael (Jaymie Johnson) Lisciandro, Melissa (Alex) Prue, Shauna (Dave) Hanna, and Mia (Peter) Moldenhauer; as well as 12 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Salvatore “Sam” Lisciandro on August 4, 2024. Further, he joins a cast of seven heavenly siblings: Vincenzo Gioia, Luigi Lisciandro, Mario Gioia, Franca Groiss, Sarafina Lisciandro, Maria Greco, and Maria Lionetti; along with his infant grandson, Joseph John Lisciandro, who passed away July 23, 1999.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00am Friday, November 15, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Paul Cygan will be celebrant. Entombment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 4-7:30pm Thursday, November 14, 2024, in the Lind Funeral Home. A brief Christian Wake Service will be observed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Apostles Parish, 27 Allen Street, Jamestown, NY 14701.
