John Carl Frye

John Carl Frye

John Carl Frye, 67, of Ashville NY, passed away peacefully at home Friday, November 15, 2024. He was born in Jamestown on October 5, 1957.

Following a sense of service that he would later instill in his son, John joined the US Army as an infantryman after high school graduation, serving in units such as 101st Airborne and 25th Infantry Division. Retiring after 15 years of service, he then followed in his father’s footsteps and lived life as an over-the-road truck driver, becoming an owner-operator until he pushed his jake brakes for good in 2020 to enjoy retirement.

John raised his family in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania where he proudly supported his son’s Mountie Football career, enjoyed endless summer days at the family river lot on the mighty Susquehanna, and was an active member in his local veterans community, even serving as Commander of the South Williamsport American Legion Post 617 for many years.

John was an avid outdoorsman and had been eagerly preparing for opening day of hunting season to be joined by his son and grandsons. His passion for nature began in childhood, with family camping trips on Goose Creek and fishing, boating, and snowmobiling adventures shared with his beloved grandparents on Lake Chautauqua.

His grandchildren were his greatest joy in life, with his beloved Buffalo Bills coming in as a close second. Let’s go Buffalo.

The memory of John’s lively spirit will be treasured by his son, Carl (Kelly) Frye of Carthage, NC; his daughter, Amanda (Tyler) Caldwell of South Williamsport, PA; grandchildren: Jakob (Samantha) Motta, Emma Motta, Shelby Motta, Johnny Frye, James Frye, Lucy Caldwell, and Benji Caldwell; a great-grandchild, Kooper Motta; his sister, Kathy (Clay) Bullers; numerous nieces and nephews, his dear friend, Dave Denn; and his ever-loyal dog, Bane.

Besides his parents, Allison “Bud” and Karen Larson Frye, John was preceded in death by his extremely influential grandmother, Julia who we all knew as “Gram”.

John’s family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 pm on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at Lind Funeral Home.

The family will hold a casual celebration of life luncheon at the South Williamsport American Legion Post 617 on Friday November 29th from 1:00-3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Gary Sinise Foundation to benefit veterans and first responders.
