Peter Smith Sr.
MAYVILLE- Peter Smith Sr, 83, of Mayville, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 7, 2024. He was born November 6, 1940, in Stockton, NY, the son of the late Ernest and Helen Furlow Smith.
Pete graduated from Mayville Central School in 1958. He then earned a bachelor’s degree from Nyack College and his master’s in education from Fredonia State University. He then worked as a High School English teacher for Chautauqua Central School and Chautauqua Lake Central School, where he retired in 2003.
Pete was a longtime member of the Dewittville Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, a member of the Town of Chautauqua Historical Society, and the NYS Historical Society.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed genealogy, and went on a weekly car rides with family through the countryside.
Pete is survived by three children, Peter Frank Smith II, of Brocton, NY, Rebecca (Richard) Bean of Olean, NY, and Rochelle (James) Bohm of Bangor, ME, ten grandchildren, Zephyr Smith, Denali Smith, Naomi (Zachary) Jensen, Rachel (Joshua) Leamon, Benjamin (Crystal) Bean, Sarah Bean, Thaddeus (Amber) Smith, Calista (Tom) Johnson, Joshua Bohm and Joseph Bohm, thirteen great-grandchildren, two brothers, Larry (Marlene) Smith of Honeoye, NY, and Christopher (Marcie) Bemis of Stockton, NY, four sisters, Mary Smith of Westfield, Margaret (Joe) Kelwaski of Sherman, NY, Ruth Frudd of Westfield, NY and Susan Hindman of Portland, NY and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Smith, four brothers, Allen Smith, Charles Smith, David Smith and Herbert Smith, and three sisters, Kathleen Turpin, Esther Lawson and Alice Francis.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 PM on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S Erie St). The funeral will be held at 11 AM on Monday, September 16, 2024, at the Dewittville Christian & Missionary Alliance Church (5821 Meadows Rd, Dewittville, NY 14728). The Rev. Andrew Frudd will officiate. Burial will be in the Dewittville Cemetery.
