Samuel Derby American Legion Auxiliary Meets
FREWSBURG – Emma Oyer served as this year’s Samuel L. Derby American Legion Auxiliary Unit 556 Poppy Girl.
Poppy Days were completed from May 16 through 18.
The picnic/July 4 cooler giveaway is being prepared, and tickets will soon be ready to sell.
A total of $450 in contributions was approved to three entities. One donation was given to the county commander’s project of obtaining funding to provide service therapy dog(s) for needy veterans in Chautauqua County The effort is part of the American Legion’s “Be the One” campaign to reduce veteran suicide. A second donation was given to sponsor the Wendy Privitera Spirit of Girls State Award, which will be given annually at the conclusion of Girls State. The American Legion Auxiliary Dept. of New York Eighth District is creating this fund in memory of Wendy Privitera, who passed away May 3 in honor of her dedicating over 37 years of her life to Girls State. The third donation was given to Quilters Haven, the local group that makes the Quilts of Valor. The group plans to present quilts to two veterans of the Samuel L. Derby Post 556.
The following officers will be installed: Verna Angelo, president; Tammy Spontarelli, first vice president; Jen Jackson, second vice president; Gwen Funcell, secretary; and Debby Walsh, treasurer. Red polo shirts will be purchased for those officers that have not yet received one. Unit 556 will next meet on June 18. All members are encouraged to attend. Meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Frewsburg Legion.
