Cleone Menz Steward

MAYVILLE- Cleone Menz Steward, 88, of Mayville, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie, PA. She was born Dec 13, 1935, in Mayville, NY, the daughter of the late Jesse and Mildred Near Menz.

Cleone was a 1954 graduate of Mayville Central School. She was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church. A wonderful homemaker for her family. She took pride in sewing her own clothes and designing outfits in her younger years, while always tending to a full garden and canning every season. She also worked summers at the Mayville Lakeside Park for 30 years, better known around town as the “gate lady” and served as the Director of the Park before finally retiring from a place that is so dear to her heart. Cleone enjoyed long walks, boating and swimming around Chautauqua Lake which she has always called home, and spending time with her grandchildren. Cleone was an avid sports fan, staying up late often to support her favorite teams.

She is survived by her loving husband and high school sweetheart, Ronald H. Steward, whom she married on October 30, 1954, four children; Rhonda (Mike) Magovac of Huron, OH, Darlene (Kevin) Bell of Carmel, IN, David (Colleen) Steward of Ashville, NY, and Katie (Scott) Bedwell of Bemus Point, NY, eight grandchildren; Kristin (Justin) Schultz of Galena, OH, Michael (Kristen) Magovac of Medina, OH, Ryan Bell of Des Plains, IL, Amanda (Marat) Yanavitski of Stillwater, MN, Kerrie (Andres) Mares-Bell of Westfield, IN, Madison (William) Collins of Bradfordwoods, PA, Jordan Steward of Bemus Point, NY, and Yvonne (David) Calcatera of Panama, NY, ten great-grandchildren, two sisters; Marilyn (Clifford) Emery of Westfield, NY, and Janet (David) Bailey of Mayville, NY, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marjean Menz.

The funeral will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville, NY (139 S Erie St), with a reception to follow. The family will receive friends for 1 hour before the funeral (1 PM to 2 PM), at the funeral home. The Rev. Natalie Womack will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
