Raymond W. Bender
Raymond W. Bender, age 89, loving husband for nearly 65 years of Loretta (Lorz); caring father of Lynn (Michael) Klotz and Michael (Kathleen) Bender; devoted grandfather of Maxwell and Samuel Klotz, and Emily and Raymond Bender.
He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Velma (LeCrone) Bender; sisters Beverly and Judith Bender; and brother and sister in-law Walton and Barbara Strahl.
Raymond’s humble start began in Geneva, Ohio, where he enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, and football, graduating in 1952. He pursued both a BS (1956) and MS (1961) in industrial engineering and administration at Case Institute of Technology, was a member of Theta Tau Engineering Society, and senior class president of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.
Due to his natural leadership skills and work ethic, Ray had a successful career in manufacturing, management, and quality assurance while working for Republic Steel, White Motor, and Xerox. His work with Xerox in Quality Assurance and Control culminated as a leader of the team winning the 1989 Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award.
Ray loved watching Chautauqua sunsets and “snow-birding” in Destin FL with Lori, supporting his grandkids, and coaching youth basketball. After their gardens were well-tended, he could be found golfing, sailing or helping a friend with a project. Ray also enjoyed being a US Power Squadron member, watching professional sports, bowling, water and snow skiing, and playing basketball, softball, and tennis.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Ray to the Point Chautauqua Association Memorial Fund (PCA, PO Box 135, Dewittville NY 14728) OR by planting a tree in his memory, thegiftedtree.com/bender
A private memorial service will be held.
Arrangements and cremation entrusted to THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS.
