Rexford C. Wilson
MAYVILLE — 89, of Mayville, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, November 3, 2023.
He was born October 30, 1934, in Westfield, NY, the son of the late Ralph Courtney and Elizabeth Peters Wilson.
Rex was a 1953 graduate of Mayville Central School. He then proudly served his country inthe United States Army from 1954 to 1956 having been stationed in Germany. He then worked as a Supervisor for the New York State Department of Transportation in Mayville, NY, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church, the Mayville Senior Citizens, the Chautauqua Historical Society, a life member of the Lake Chautauqua Memorial VFW Post 8647, past member and president of the Mayville Area J.C.’s, and past member of the Hartfield EUB Church and Youth Director. He was also a member of the Chautauqua Youth Commission and had coached Little League Baseball.
Rex enjoyed rooting for the Pittsburgh Pirates, making maple syrup, woodworking, senior citizen tours, listening to country music, mowing the lawn, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his fiance and loving and constant companion, Wanda J. Gustafson, four children: Keith A (Becky) Wilson of Sparta, NC, Steven D. (Laura) Wilson of Mayville, NY, Debra J. Wilson of Mayville, NY, and David S (Barbara) Wilson of Mayville, NY, one foster daughter: Sarah (Mike) Brown of Avon Park, FL, nine grandchildren: Derek, Craig, Danielle, Joshua, Jordan, Taylor, Ryan, Rachel, and Jessica, seven great-grandchildren, and one brother: Leo S. (Mary) Wilson of Dewittville, NY, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of forty-seven years, MarilynThayer Wilson.
The funeral will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at the Freay Funeral
Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St). The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 8,
2023, (7 PM – 8 PM) and for one hour prior to the funeral (10 AM – 11 AM), at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
