Ross John Abers

Ross John Abers, 90, of Jamestown, formerly of Mudcreek Road, Kennedy, passed away Wednesday (March 8, 2023) at UPMC- Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.

He was born October 26, 1932 in Jamestown, the son of the John Edward and Gertrude Marie (Langworthy) Abers.

Ross was a 1951 graduate of Panama High School and a Veteran of the United States Airforce, serving during the Korean War Era from October 22, 1951 to October 22, 1959, where he held the rank of Staff Sargent.

He retired after 40 1/2 years of service with MRS-TRW-SKF Aerospace in Jamestown. He was a member of the Randolph American Legion Post 181, past member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, Kennedy and Panama Grange and Jamestown War Vets. He was also was a member of the Kennedy United Methodist Church.

Family was everything to Ross and spending time with family was his favorite hobby. His interests included watching and attending sports of all kinds, mowing lawns at Abers Acres in Kennedy, watching the NY Yankees, Buffalo Bills and anything with Randolph Cardinal Sports.

He played basketball, football and baseball for Panama High School and attended and coached little league baseball for his son John’s team.

He is survived by his Sandra Lee (Simmes) Abers, whom he married on May 23, 2000, his four children, John (Sue) Abers of Kennedy, Cathleen (Steve) Kimball of Kennedy, Brenda (Chris Curley of Dekalb Junction, NY and Diana (David) Cheney of Frewsburg, as well as his late daughter, Laurel “Laurie (Mel) Lindquist, 27 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

He is additionally survived by his siblings, Violet Field and Allene Lawson, four step children; Danny Peru of Kennedy, Debra Hall of Bemus Point, Dawn Milliman and Darlene Peru, both of Randolph. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel Abers and Larry Abers, a grandson, Nathaniel Walker and a great granddaughter, Elizabeth Byrne.

The family will receive family and friends from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday (March 14, 2023) in the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church Street, Randolph. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday (March 13, 2023) from the Kennedy United Methodist Church. Pastor Jennifer Delahoy will officiate. Burial/Inurnment will be at the Myrtle Cemetery Kennedy.
