Richard A. Sheldon

Richard A. Sheldon, “Poppy,” 96, of Panama, N.Y., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022.

Richard was a strong man with high ideals and a man of his word. He was born May 1, 1926 in Watts Flats, N.Y. Raised in the Panama area, he attended Panama Schools. He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran where he served on the USS Antietam Aircraft Carrier. Richard was a 39 year employee of Crescent Tools in Jamestown from where he retired.

A man of strong faith, he was a longtime member of the Niobe Baptist Church. Richard had an extensive tool collection. He was a self-taught handyman who could fix anything and was always willing to help anyone who needed his assistance.

His wife of 75 years, Leona M. Sheldon, “T-T,” died July 9, 2022.

He is survived by three daughters: Jane Swanson of Lakewood, N.Y., Kathy Lobdell of Midlothian, VA. and Tricia (Matt) McAdoo of Jamestown, N.Y. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 7 great great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Karen Sheldon and a niece, Darlene Goodman.

Richard is predeceased by his parents; two daughters: Sharon Brink (late Bruce) and Pamela Reagle and son, Vernon Sheldon.

Calling hours will be Friday 4-7pm at the Spitzer Funeral Home, 8728 E. Main St. Clymer, N.Y. where a funeral service will be held Saturday at 1pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Panama Volunteer Fire Department, 27 Main Street, Panama, NY 14767.
