Lynn Marie Johnson

Lynn Marie Johnson, 55, of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, after a short fight with liver cancer.

Lynn was born in Jamestown, N.Y., on Dec. 17, 1966, to parents George W. and Violet Alm Johnson.

She was a 1985 graduate of Jamestown High School and attended Houghton College. She also earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Music in Bassoon Performance and Master of Arts Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

Lynn was an accomplished bassoonist. She was a proud member and president of the Carnegie Mellon University chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) Music Honor Society. Lynn was in the marching band at Jamestown High School, and later at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), she played in the CMU Wind Ensemble, CMU Philharmonic Orchestra and in a woodwind quintet in the Chamber Music Program. In 1988, Lynn performed Beethoven’s Mass in C major and Mahler’s Symphony #4 under the direction of Keith Lockhart at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Lynn taught bassoon at Mars Hill College and also performed with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony and the Asheville Symphony Orchestra among others.

Lynn had a distinguished career as an arts administrator, eventually specializing in college admissions. She worked at some of the finest arts organizations in the country including Chautauqua Institution, Brevard Music Center, The Hartt School and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Many young musicians can credit Lynn for guiding them to the right school or summer program to advance their studies and careers.

She was predeceased by her mother, Violet.

She is survived by her father, George W. Johnson of Jamestown, N.Y.; and other friends and family. Lynn was a wonderful friend and confidant to many and will be deeply missed.

A private service will be held in Jamestown, N.Y. Inurnment will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
