Emmett F. Devlin
WESTFIELD – Emmett F. Devlin, 87, of Westfield, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home, September 11, 2022, with his loving family at his side.
Emmett was born April 14, 1935, in Jamestown, N.Y., a son to the late Harry and Mary (Laughlin) Devlin.
He attended Jamestown High School and after completing school, his first job was delivering newspapers. He then became a projectionist at the Pick 17 DriveIn in Jamestown, N.Y.
Emmett met the love of his life on a blind date at Midway Park at the roller rink, and on April 16, 1955, he married Norma Burkhalder at St. James R.C. Church in Jamestown, N.Y.
Emmett and Norma relocated to Westfield, N.Y. and together they raised three children.
He began working for his wife’s uncle ‘Burky’ in the custom farming business and he thrived in the agriculture business and was a single proprietor in custom farming. He owned several grape vineyards and catered to the local farmers selling them lime for their vineyards and distributing grape pomace for fertilizer. The business included snow plowing, grape spraying, and picking. At one time, Emmett owned a feed hauling business.
He was a Welch delegate, taught 4-H students about snowmobiles, a member of St. Dominic’s parish of Westfield, past member of the Westfield Fire Department’s Hook and Ladder Co., Life member of the Westfield Exempt Fireman’s Assoc.,Westfield Moose Lodge 118, Farm Bureau, and Grower’s Co – Op.
In his spare time, he loved to fly airplanes, sail on his sailboat, mow lawns, and enjoyed long rides on his Gold Wing motorcycle with his wife and looked forward to the winter months in Jensen Island and Hutchinson Island, both in Florida.
He visited Ireland numerous times and always referred to it as ‘going home to family’.
Emmett enjoyed retirement because he enjoyed helping his daughter in the feed store, Devlin Farm Supply in Westfield, N.Y.. and loved to help her out in the summers.
He is survived by his daughter; Sandra (John Hancock) Devlin, granddaughter; Heather Eckman, grandson; Donald (Sarah) Eckman, and his beloved great-grandchildren; Finn Jacob and Grace Norma Eckman.
In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Norma, his sons David and Daniel, and sister; Ann Marie Madden and her husband John.
Visitation at the Morse Funeral Home, 51 Highland Avenue, Brocton, N.Y. will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2022, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, September 19, 2022, at St. Dominic’s RC Church, 12 Central Avenue, Brocton, N.Y., at 11 a.m. with Father David Tourville officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Westfield, N.Y.
