MAYVILLE — Dr. C. Alan Riedesel, 91, of Mayville, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunkirk, N.Y.

He was born July 21, 1930, in Monona, Iowa, the son of the late Clark and Dorothy Franco Riedesel.

Alan was a 1946 graduate of Bennett High School. He then attended Cornell College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and the University of Iowa where he earned his Master of Arts and Ph.D.

He was a professor emeritus of the University at Buffalo where he served as a professor from 1972-95 teaching elementary math education. He was the editor of the Arithmetic Teacher and the author of six editions of “Mathematics for Elementary Teachers”.

Alan was a member of the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mayville, N.Y. He enjoyed bird watching, gardening, and wood carving.

He is survived by his five children: Christine (Kurt) Osterling of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Mark (Heather) Riedesel of Boston, Mass., Claudia (William) Notz of Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Matthew (Michelle) Riedesel Detroit, Mich., and Craig (Connie) Riedesel of Mayville, N.Y.; six grandchildren: Lauren Osterling, Courtney (Ben) Sweeney, Andrew (Cassie) Osterling, Ian, Elise and Evan Riedesel; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ardeth L. Scott Riedesel, whom he married Aug. 18, 1951, at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa; and one sister, Nancy Spencer.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 3-6 p.m., on Friday, June 17, 2022, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 South Erie St). A private graveside service will be held in the Westfield Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
