Dorothy L. Nelson, 96, formerly of Lakewood, passed away Wednesday morning, June 22, 2022, at Heritage Green Rehab & Skilled Nursing.
She was born July 29, 1925, in Jamestown, a daughter of the late Einar and Edith Johnson Franson, and was a 1943 graduate of Lakewood High School.
During World War II, Dorothy worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. After returning to Jamestown, she was employed for many years as an expeditor by the former Union National Furniture. As a bookkeeper, she then worked for the law firm of Wright, Wright & Hampton and retired from Key Bank, Inc.
Dorothy was a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar Guild for over 35 years. She was a past president of the Lakewood American Legion Auxiliary and held many offices since 1947, was a trip leader for many years for the Lakewood -Busti Golden Agers, member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club Auxiliary, and enjoyed making deliveries for Meals On Wheels for many years.
Surviving are three children: James (Diane) Nelson of Ooltewah, Tenn., Jeff (Marsha) Nelson of Lancaster, N.Y., and Janice (Kevin) Nelson of Bemus Point, N.Y.; nine grandchildren: Eric (Kristin) Nelson of McKinney, Texas, Andrew Nelson of Huntsville, Ala., Joshua Densmore of Lakewood, N.Y., Christopher (Kara) Densmore of Jamestown, Jessica Nelson of Lancaster, N.Y., Julianne and Kristina Nelson, both of Kenmore, N.Y., Brianna (Guy) Meek of Spring Hill, Fla., and Garrett (Pam Colon) Nelson of Rochester, NY; and five great grandchildren: Anna Nelson of Philadelphia, PA, Ethan and Charlie Densmore of Jamestown, and Avery and Guy Jr. Meek of Spring Hill, Fla. Dorothy is also survived by a brother, David (Margaret) Franson of Clinton, Conn.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Rodney E. Nelson in 1991; second husband, John Hanselman in 2008; and a sister, June Wakeley; and brother, Paul Franson.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy J. Hoyer will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
