Sebastian “Sonny” Bonfiglio
Sebastian “Sonny” Bonfiglio, 93, died April 20, 2022, at Guthrie Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. A lifelong resident of Jamestown, NY, he was born on January 10, 1929 to the late Rosario and Salvatrice Lombardo Bonfiglio. He was the husband of Dolores Verquer Bonfiglio, whom he married on June 28, 1952.
Sonny, the ninth child of Sicilian immigrants, grew up in what is now known as the Lost Neighborhood of Jamestown and attended St. James Parochial School and Jamestown Public Schools. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He co-owned the family gas station with his brother on the corner of Foote Ave. and Harrison Street, and was employed by Bigelows, Qualtop Beverages, and later worked in construction with various companies.
In addition to spending time with his seven children, 18 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, he enjoyed time on the golf course, at the Casino, watching sports and old movies, and listening to music.
Sonny was known to always have a great story to share. His love of a good time, his resiliency, and way of living life as he wanted, touched everyone who met and knew him. His sense of humor and huge presence will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, his children; Barbara (Michael) Sebastian, Julie (Michael) Calveric, William (Susan), Thomas (Kristi), Lisa (Kevin) Kaiser, Karen (David) Briggs, and Mary Beth (William Dunwoody), his grandchildren; Andrew Sebastian, Alyssa (Marc) Riley, Michael (Kerri) Calveric, Matthew (Barbara Jo) Calveric, Alexandra (Jay) Peworchik, Halie Bonfiglio, Benjamin Bonfiglio, Anthony Bonfiglio, Sophia Bonfiglio, Emma Kaiser, Tess Kaiser, Hannah Briggs, Christian Briggs, Leah Briggs, Mia Rose Dunwoody, Sula Dunwoody, and Zaida Dunwoody, 11 great-grandchildren, and his brother, Ross.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Giacomo, brothers, James and Joseph, sisters, Carmela Bonfiglio, Pauline Stravato, Helen Halt, and Josephine Gaeta and grandson, Alan Sebastian.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. The family will receive friends and family from 9-9:45 a.m. in the church beforehand.
