Harold Reed Bower Jr.
Devoted husband, family man, and successful business owner, Harold Reed Bower Jr. (March 20, 1939 to July 12, 2021), passed away at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. He was brave in all he did in life, and that bravery served him well as he fought his final courageous battle against Parkinson’s Disease.
A 1957 graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central School, Harold lived most of his life in Gerry, N.Y. He was a self-taught and a self-made man, with an unparalleled ambition and work-ethic. No task was too challenging. He built his auto repair shop into a thriving business in Jamestown, that remained a downtown fixture for over 37 years. He had the remarkable expertise, patience and attention-to-detail required to restore antique automobiles. He designed and built by hand a beautiful family home surrounded by perennial gardens that he lovingly planted and tended. His many talents extended to the worlds of woodworking, golf, and card playing (which he enjoyed both with family and his crowd of friends). He was passionate about his granddogs, travel, camping and sports, especially football and the Buffalo Bills. He loved square dancing and country music. He spent many years as a volunteer for the Gerry Fire Department. He had an infectious smile, competitive spirit, and the ability to perform hilarious skits with his friends and grandchildren.
Harold enjoyed such a full and accomplished life. His greatest achievement was his devotion to and love for his family, especially his wife of nearly 62 years, Janice Bower. The couple enjoyed retirement in Ocala, Fla., for 19 years.
His memory will be forever cherished by his children: Steven Bower of Gerry, N.Y., Kathy Bower (Randolph Richardson) of Southbury, Conn., Sherry Bower of Falconer, N.Y.; and by his four grandchildren: Anna, Julia and Grace Bower Richardson and Reed Bower. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Atwell (Dick Atwell) of Shenandoah, Va.; and brother, Roy Bower (Kathleen Bower) of Sinclairville, NY.; his aunt, Joan Imm of Port Charlotte, Fla.; as well as nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Harold was predeceased by his mother, Frances LeBaron Bower and father, Harold Bower Sr.; brother, Robert Bower; and sister, Ethel McEvoy.
A celebration of life Service will be held on Aug. 7, 2021, at the Rosch Activity Center at the Lutheran Campus (184 ¢ Aldren Ave., Jamestown, NY). Friends may call from 10-11 a.m., with a service of worship and celebration of Harold’s life to be held at 11 a,m. Harold’s first cousin, the Rev. Trudy Haight, will preside.
