Alton L. Harrington
MAYVILLE — Alton L. Harrington, 81, died unexpectedly on July 19, 2021.
He was born on October 14, 1939 in Mayville to Claude and Bernice Fuller Harrington.
Alton was a 1957 graduate of Mayville Central School. He was then employed for a short time by the NYS Thruway but most of his work years were at the Town of Chautauqua Highway Department in Mayville, the later part until his retirement as Assistant Highway Superintendent.
During his working career and after his retirement he helped on the family farm with his brother Larry and his two nephews. After Larry was killed in an accident in 1997, Alton, along with his nephews Mark and Terry Sanden, formed Mud Creek Dairy, LLC in January 2013.
He was a past member of the Chautauqua Grange and former board member of the Farmers Mill in Sherman.
He is survived by three sisters: Barbara Witherow of South Ripley, Lois Maloy of Mayville, and Christine (John) Kroll of Mayville.
Also surviving are nephews Michael and Wayne Harrington of Westfield, Lavern Harrington, Curtis Witherow, Kirk Szylenski, Troy Hess, Mark and Terry Sanden, all of Mayville, Kevin Witherow of Winsor, VA, two nieces, Amy Barrows of Mayville, and Jennifer Light of Ripley and several great nephews and nieces and great great nephews and two great great nieces.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Smith and Rose VonVollen, two brothers, Cecil Harrington and Larry Harrington.
Alton loved spending time with family at gather-ings and was country all the way. He was always willing to help whenever necessary both family and friends. He loved passing on knowledge of farming to younger generations and showing some of his nieces and nephews how to drive a team of draft horses, which when he was young he helped prepare fields with a team of horses. He always enjoyed having and driving the draft horses in the fourth of July parade.
The funeral will be held at 1 PM on Monday, July 26, 2021 at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St). The Rev. Mark Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
Friends will be received for visitation from 2-5 PM on Sunday, July 25th, at the funeral home.
