Margaret L. “Peggy” Johnson

Margaret Louise “Peggy” Johnson, 89, formerly of 109 Niagara Ave., James-town, passed away Sunday (Jan. 3, 2021) in the Lutheran Home.

She was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Newton Falls, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ben and Esther (Finnical) Chipukaizer.

Peggy was a graduate of Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in home economics. She played the sousaphone in high school and college bands. After graduation, she was employed by Geauga County in Burton, Ohio, as a home demonstration agent. When she married and moved to Chautauqua County, she was briefly employed by Frewsburg Central School as a science teacher. Peggy was a dedicated homemaker and received her licensed practical nursing credentials in 1983.

She served on the James-town Board of Education from 1976-82. Peggy was active in Girl Scouts of WNY, having served as a scout leader and scout trainer, and she was a member of the Girl Scout Alumni Association. She served as a poll worker for the Chautauqua County Board of Elections. She was a member of the form-er Stillwater United Methodist Church and choir, and Zion Covenant Church. In 1992, she served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross to help in the re-lief efforts after Hurricane Andrew, in Homestead, Fla.

Peggy enjoyed her family, grandchildren, great- grandchildren, canning, growing vegetables and flowers in her gardens, traveling and camping. She was an avid and skilled seamstress.

Surviving are two sons: Bruce (Debbie) Johnson of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Quentin (Mary) Johnson of Falconer; two daughters: Natasha (Allan) Patchen of Knoxville, Tenn., and Anita (Herb) Gaston of Bluff Point, N.Y.; nine grandchildren: Ryan Johnson (Heath-er), Brandon Johnson (Alysia), Anna Patchen, Andrew Patchen, Simon Gaston (Kristy), Rachel Gaston (Zevi Rubin), Han-nah Gaston, Philip Gaston and Paul Gaston; and eight great-grandchildren: Cole, Cooper and Cameron John-son; Mosaia, Levi and Josiah Johnson and Isaac and Marian Gaston.

She was preceded in death by her husband,, Arnold R. “Dick” Johnson whom she married June 6, 1954, in Newton Falls, Ohio, and who died June 20, 2017; and a sister, Phyllis Hauck.

No funeral service or visitation will be observed. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to the Girl Scouts of WNY Maintenance Fund for Camp Timbercrest, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 118 Spring St., James-town, NY 14701 or to the Falconer Public Library, 101 W. Main St., Falconer, NY 14733.
