Leslie M. (Sharpe) Murphy
KENNEDY — Leslie M. (Sharpe) Murphy, 75, of Waterman Road, Kennedy, Town of Ellington, passed away on Tuesday (Nov. 10, 2020) at home after a courageous battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, with her family by her side.
She was born Sept. 23, 1945, in Salamanca, N.Y., the daughter of the late, Alonzo Addison (Sharky) Sharpe and Lorraine Remington Sharpe.
Leslie was a 1963 graduate of Randolph Central School and the Humboldt Institute Airline travel school in 1964. She was an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation and the Bear Clan.
Following her schooling to become an airline stewardess, she worked for Pan-American Airlines out of JFK airport in New York City, where she was the communications lead operator, she then changed drastic course and became a heavy equipment operator for the Coldspring Construction Company based out of Akron, N.Y.
Leslie had traveled extensively throughout the world with work, and she enjoyed riding horses, farming, boating, arts and crafts and spending time at Allegany State Park with her family and dear friends. She will be remembered for her kindness and keen sense of humor.
She is survived by a daughter, Lori-Anne (Charlie) Schmeltz of Randolph; a son, Erik (Stephanie) Williams of Jamestown; her companion and caregiver, Gary Sleight of Dansville, N.Y.; seven grandchildren: Karinah, Karighan and Kaidynce Walker, Tyler Williams, Karlee Walker-Rock and Lorelle and Maverick Schmeltz; two great-grandchildren: Ryleigh Jackson and Mateo Torres. Additional survivors include siblings: Donna (Mort) Ettelson of Brooklyn, Pamela Baker of Leon, N.Y., and Tina Sharpe of Steamburg’ numerous stepchildren, step grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law; Diane (Bud) Baker, Cheryl (Tim) Baker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold K Murphy in August of 2010; her stepmother, Jane Marie Sharpe; and brothers: Arthur “Bud” Baker and Timothy Baker.
A visitation and celebration of Leslie’s life will be held when Covid restrictions allow her to be fully honor in the way that she deserved. This date and time will be announced by the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home in Randolph.
