Dr. Nestor Cifuentes

Dr. Nestor Cifuentes, passed away Oct. 22, 2018, at his home in Dunkirk, N.Y., with his good friend and caretaker, Helen Echevarria-Pierce at his side.
Nestor was born April 4, 1938, in Fomeque, Columbia, to Jose Juan Gualberto Cifuentes Leon and Rosa Gamez Perez de Cifuentes.
Nestor was a very educated man, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1956 and his medical degree in 1963.
Arriving in the United States in 1963, he continued his education with internships, fellowships and residencies at James Walker Memorial Hospital, St. Agnes Hospital, Babies Hospital, Wilmington General Hospital, Sister’s Hospital, SUNY at Buffalo and Roswell Memorial Park.
He was published in the Journal of Surgical Oncology in 1979. He wrote “Metastases From Carcinoma of Mammary Gland: An Autopsy Study”.
Nestor was a staff physician at Brooks Memorial Hospital, BCIC at SUNY Fredonia, physician at Planned Parenthood in Buffalo, emergency room physician at Brooks Memorial Hospital, physician at Lakeview Shock Correctional Facility and his private practice, retiring in 1999.
His greatest milestone was becoming a United States Citizen in 1998.
Nestor was a lieutenant in the U.S Navy from 1966-68.
Nestor’s memberships included the Moose Club in Dunkirk, N.Y. and American Cancer Society.
After retirement, his love of travel was immense, traveling all over Europe, Ireland, Germany and his favorite and last trip was going to Russia.
He enjoyed cross country skiing, golfing and eating great food… and his favorites, desserts!
Nestor leaves behind two brothers, Gualberto Cifuentes-Gamez and Pedro Pablo Cifuentes-Gamez; two sisters: Clara Cifuentes-Romero and Ceclia Cifuentes-Gamez; a son, Nicholas Lloyd; two granddaughters and two grandsons. He also leaves behind his U.S. family: Helen Echevarria-Pierce (Rodger), Hilda and Ronald Moscicki, Harry and Carmen Echevarria and their family, Hugo Echevarria, Camron, Camron Jr Rivera, Seryna Ancelet and Amanda Ippolito; and many friends including the Seel Street neighbors.

Any donations can be made in Nestor’s memory to Lakeshore Humane Society or American Cancer Society.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, 10 a.m. to noon. A Prayer service will held at noon with Fr. Walter officiating and Milta Cosme at Fantauzzi Funeral Home, 82 E. Main St., Fredonia, N.Y.
