1944 to 2018
James B. Ritter, 74, of Cattaraugus, N.Y., passed away at home Sept. 17, 2018.
He was born March 4, 1944, in Gowanda, N.Y., to the late Leland and Janice Ritter.
James is survived by his brother, Ellwyn (Ace); and his sister, Lorraine.
James lived all of his life in the Village of Cattaraugus. He was an essential part of the village and was loved by all. Jim drove around in his red truck that he nicknamed “Big Red.” Everyone knew it was him when they saw the red truck coming down the road.
Jim spent much of his life being a farmhand on local farms like Smith’s, Fleckenstein’s and Dechow’s. He also worked for Agway and Setterstixs. James was happiest when being involved in the local fire company where he was a longtime member. Recently the Cattaraugus Fire District presented Jim with an honorary chief’s badge. This was a memorable and cherished moment in Jim’s life. Jim was also a member of the Otto Fire Company, Cattaraugus County Fire Police and was always in attendance at Cattaraugus County and Southwestern New York Firemen’s Conventions.
In retirement, James shoveled snow for local churches and was a frequent and devoted customer at Pascarella’s Restaurant each morning for coffee.
