Gary Underwood

March 20, 1949 to July 1, 2018
Gary, 69, born March 20, 1949, in Jamestown, N.Y., received an offer to be stressed free and at peace, which he couldn’t turn down, on July 1, 2018.
He loved his Chevy truck, riding his Harley, an watching NASCAR. He was in car sales for many decades, He was known as the Cricket Cart man in Deland and the Drill guy in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., who came to the rescue of many beach goers with their umbrellas. His favorite hang outs were the beach and the convenient store parking lot, buying his lotto ticket, sitting on the tail gate of his truck, having a smoke and a cup of coffee in his hand, talking to everyone who passed by him.
He served in the U.S. Navy, during the Vietnam War, rescuing prisoners from their bamboo jails, where he received cuts and scars that stayed with him during the remainder of his life. He spent his last five years caring for his father-in-law, daily, who suffers from dementia. Everyone who remembers Gary is asked to celebrate him by raising a cup of their favorite coffee in his memory.
He leaves behind a heartache no one can heal and memories no one can take away, his wife, Kathy Underwood of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; his son, Jeremy Sloan of Clermont; and his cherished companion, Peanut.
Instead of flowers, Gary would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in his name.
