Charles E. Beckwith

Charles E. Beckwith, 94, of Heritage Village, Gerry, walked confidently into Heaven shouting “Amen, Praise the Lord” on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, while “How Great Thou Art” was being sung.

He was born Oct. 14, 1921, in Rochester, a son of the late Rev. George Albert and Alice Collett Beckwith. He was a 1942 graduate of Wellsboro High School, Wellsboro, Pa.

Chuck served in WWII from 1942-1946, in the U.S. Army European Theater, and was awarded decorations, including two bronze stars. He fought with the 102nd Infantry Division (Ozarks) in the 405th anti-tank regiment as an anti-tank gunner with the 57 gun.

He operated and managed the Gerry Homes Farm from 1952-63, as well as assisting with maintenance on the campus as needed. Chuck and his wife, Hilda, moved to the campus of Gerry homes/Heritage Village where he was in charge of buildings and grounds of both upper and lower campuses as director of maintenance until his retirement in 1990.

Chuck was instrumental in the design and building of the Immanuel Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church of Falconer, where he was a member. He served as Sunday School superintendent and held various offices on church boards.

He was the devoted and beloved husband of 68 years to Hilda Maynard Beckwith, whom he married Nov. 15, 1946, in Wellsboro, Pa. She preceded him in death on Feb. 7, 2015. He was the father of Janet (Marvin) Macy of Longford, KS, Martin (late Faith) of McMurray, Pa., and Melanie Alter of Cochranton, Pa.; grandfather of Tammy Perham, Stephen Beckwith, Amy Zink, Scott Alter, Robin Gray, Vicki Frazier, Heather Nader and the late Terry Macy; great-grandfather of Eli Perham, Alma and Harrison Beckwith, Charlie, Evie and Ruby Zink, Jenia, Taya and Leanna Gray, Lia, Melanie and Herschel Frazier; brother of Robert Beckwith of Rome, N.Y. and the late Ruth (Harold) Schwab, Edith, Mabel, Dean, Bernard and Donald Beckwith. He is also survived by nieces and a nephew.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, in Seeley Auditorium of Schwab Manor, Heritage Village. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m., Friday, in Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville and one hour prior to the service at Seeley Auditorium. Burial will be in Gerry Cemetery with military honors provided by Cassadaga Memorial American Legion 1280.

Memorials may be made to the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Missions or to Heritage Village, Gerry.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Seeley Auditorium of Schwab Manor, Heritage Village, Gerry. Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Friday in Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville, and one hour prior to the service at Seeley Auditorium.
