Vote To Change Alternate Parking Coming In April

Changes are likely coming to Jamestown’s alternate parking rules next month.

During Monday’s work session, Councilman Randy Daversa, R-At Large and chair of the Public Works Committee, said the city has been discussing moving the start date for alternate parking from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1, and there are two options to go about making the change on the city’s signs.

“There are two different signs, there’s bigger green ones and smaller red and white ones,” Daversa said. “They can put patches on the green ones, and the red and white ones were going to need replaced at some point anyway, so we would do a replacement there.”

Mark Roetzer, city public works director, said the cost to replace the green signs would be more than $100, while buying patches to cover the two sections with the months costs about $7 a piece. The small red and white signs cost $16 each to replace, where two patches on those would be $14, so in that case the signs would just be replaced. The project total would be $3,785, not including labor for the traffic department. Roetzer said a resolution will be put together by the corporation counsel’s office for next month to change the City Code.

Daversa addressed some concerns from people thinking the current parking change was a month too early.

“We do get a freak storm now and then, and with the temperature a little bit up we usually can accommodate the snow removal fairly decently,” Daversa said. “A lot of people are in favor of this to happen.”

A question was raised that if needed could it be changed back to October with a freak storm, and it was addressed that communication would be a problem with that. Additionally, it was noted that snow plow blades are often not on the plows in October anyway, but that they can be put on if needed. The end date of April 1 for alternate parking will stay the same.

Starting at $2.99/week.
