Forty years ago, Falconer firefighters helped a tour bus group make it through the night when the bus became stranded on old Route 17.
Firefighters’ efforts, and those of the Falconer community, weren’t forgotten.
Falconer Mayor James Jaroszynski read a letter during a recent Falconer Village Board of Trustees meeting from Patrick Farrell about a 1985 charter bus that ended up stuck in the snow. The Falconer Volunteer Fire Department assisting Farrell and those on the bus.
“. …On January 21, 1985, during Super Bowl Sunday, a charter bus I ran got stuck in the snow for a little while on Route 17, which was closed down due to a snowstorm,” Farrell wrote.
“Thank you to all the Falconer FD volunteers who came out to rescue us and set us up in the Falconer High School gym where we spent the night as the storm passed.”
Farrell said that the food (McDonald’s) and warm blankets they received was greatly appreciated by all that night, and is fondly remembered by all who were on the trip.
However, Farrell did say he regretted not having a camera to document the kind acts of generosity bestowed upon him and his charter guest that night.
“Unfortunately, I don’t believe we have any pictures from that event, as it pre-dates the popular cell phone and I didn’t have a Kodak Instamatic (camera) on hand to document the event,” Farrell wrote.
