Local Applicants Needed for OCFS Parent Advisory Board

Chautauqua County is looking for local parents and caregivers to join a state Office of Child and Family Services Parent Advisory Board.

The Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene and Social Services is encouraging local parents and caregivers to apply for membership on the New York State Office of Children and Family Services Parent Advisory Board. The board aims to empower parents and caregivers involved in the child welfare system by giving them a platform to share insights and make recommendations. Applications are accepted through Nov. 15.

The board seeks applicants with firsthand experience in New York’s child welfare system. Eligible candidates include parents, kinship caregivers, foster parents (both kin and non-relative), and adoptive parents. Through a structured three-year term, members will work with the state Office of Children and Family Services to improve safety, permanency, and well-being for families and children across New York state.

“This Parent Advisory Board is a unique opportunity for parents and caregivers to directly influence improvements in our child welfare system,” said Carmelo Hernandez, county mental hygiene and social services director. “We strongly encourage those with personal experience to apply. Their insights are essential for shaping policies that prioritize family and child well-being across New York.”

The Parent Advisory Board consists of up to 16 members. To qualify, applicants must:

– Have current or prior involvement in the child welfare system.

– Complete a membership application and pass state and federal background checks.
