Kayla Malika Walker has moved over to the other side of the lens.
Add independent filmmaker to her resume.
Walker always has loved singing and dancing – reasons enough that gently cajoled her to find her passion in the acting and theater realm.
“I started doing theater, and once I did that, I really loved it,” Walker said.
In 2023 she had a lead role as Chyna in the film “Levi,” which was filmed in Buffalo. Other acting projects include commercials for Raymour & Flanigan Furniture, McDonald’s, and M&T Bank.

Now, she’s writing and directing, and loving those roles as well.
“As I continued to develop my skills, I realized my aspirations extended to writing and producing my own films,” she added.
While attending an acting showcase in Orlando, Fla., in 2020, she met Justin Carmouche, who shared her vision.
“We instantly connected,” Walker said. “Our shared vision led to countless brainstorming sessions, and together, we are determined to make our film a success.”
The film is titled “Indigo” and was shot from Sept. 5 to Sept. 8 in Alexandria, La. Walker said “Indigo” is the first in a series entitled “The Last Days,” which focuses on a young girl with superpowers.
Anastasia Patoka-Smith, 9, plays the lead role of Kamiyah.
“It’s just about a young black girl. She’s nine years old, and she’s an indigo who has superpowers, and she is with her godmother,” Walker said.
She added that in the movie, the godmother sends Kamiyah to her biological aunt for the summer. The aunt helps Kamiyah with her superpowers.
“But that’s not all that her aunt has in mind. She has other things in mind that she’s going to be teaching her (Kamiyah) that are secret,” she added.
Walker said that during a brainstorming session Carmouche and her came up with the film’s title.
“She’s an indigo child,” Walker said. “She’s the last one. She’s the last Indigo (child) on Earth.”
According to centreofexcellence.com, Indigo Children are creative and rebellious souls who are here to lead people into the new age of enlightenment and evolution. Indigo Children are agents of peace and justice, and they have no tolerance for evil. They are often born with memories of their divine gifts, qualities, and mission, and they come from the spiritual dimension of Earth that hasn’t yet finished ascending.
Because Carmouche lives in Louisiana, and Walker lives here in Jamestown, the duo connected through FaceTime to discuss the editing.
The filming took three-and-a-half days. Because deadlines and budgets were tight and had to be kept, the duo filmed for 22 hours straight on one day.
Walker said on Nov. 16, the film will premiere in Houston, and then after that showing, she wants to find a local theater in Jamestown for a local premiere.
