Gust and Diane Calamunci have a lot of reasons to smile.

Gust Calamunci will turn 90 on Thursday. The Calamunci’s grandson is set to tie the knot next week in Ohio and the Calamuncis will celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary. Needless to say, the restaurant will be closed Sept. 1-8 while the Calamuncis take some much-needed family time – though those who want to wish Gust Calamunci happy birthday can do so today. Johnny’s will have a birthday cake for Gust, and according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page anyone who wants a slice is welcome to one until the cake is gone.

While reaching the age of 90 is noteworthy, Gust Calamunci chose to impart some sage-words-of-wisdom, for those wishing to duplicate his achievement of reaching nine decades on this earth and to learn his secret to vitality.

“Eat lots of hot dogs,” he said. “Eat at least one a day – if not more. Hot dogs make everyone happy.”

Surrounded by family and friends, Gust was all smiles Tuesday during the lunchtime rush at Johnny’s.

According to johnnyslunch.com, Johnny’s Lunch began its foray into the restaurant business in 1936. Johnny Colera’s, the original owner, objective was to build a business to support his family. He began a tradition of quality and value which continues today.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve been married 62 years,” said Dianne Calamunci, wife and co-proprietor of the restaurant. “We bought the restaurant from my parents and Gust has been smiling ever since.”

A quick search of Johnny’s Lunch Facebook page and other social media sites shows a long list of well wishers and people posting generally fond memories of the now more than 88 years old eatery. Johnny’s Lunch Facebook postings regarding the Trifecta of Events has garnered more than 254 likes, 51 comments and 94 shares. Some of the postings draw on memories of other locations the eatery has been located at over the years.

“We’re just normal people who’ve been extremely blessed by our family and a community who’s supported us all these years,” said Diane Calamunci. “Family and friends are what’s most important in life. …And maybe a few hotdogs.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
