Carrubba Expresses Thanks As Term On City Council Comes To End
Marie Carrubba had several people to thank as her term on the Jamestown City Council expires at the end of the year. However, it was the council that showed its appreciation to the Fourth Ward Democrat during Monday’s voting session by giving her a standing ovation for her nearly decade of public service.
Carrubba, who lost her reelection bid to Joseph Paterniti in November’s General Election, briefly addressed the City Council in what was her final meeting.
She thanked her husband and two sons “for their unwavering support. I wouldn’t and couldn’t have done this without you.”
Carrubba also acknowledged former Mayor Sam Teresi for “having confidence in appointing me to the Fourth Ward vacancy in 2013” as well as Greg Rabb, former City Council president, to whom she said, “I can’t express how much I learned from you … in how to conduct the city’s business in a professional manner.”
During her tenure, Carrubba served on a number of boards and commissions, including the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities. At present, she’s chair of the city’s Housing Committee.
While on the council, she served two years as its president while there was a female majority.
“I could not have been prouder to work with such confident and capable women,” she said.
Carrubba also thanked Fourth Ward city residents.
“It was my honor and privilege to serve you,” she said. “Your questions challenged me to find solutions to problems I could have never anticipated and helped me to become a stronger advocate on your behalf.”
She expressed appreciation to Mayor Eddie Sundquist, whose term also ends on Dec. 31, and his staff for streaming council meetings. Doing so, she remarked, has made the meetings more accessible to seniors and those with disabilities who otherwise might not attend.
In closing, Carrubba also thanked her fellow council members, both past and present.
“It has been my honor to work with you through all the challenges that Jamestown has faced over the years,” she said. “I am pleased to state that the council has always worked in a bipartisan manner for the betterment of Jamestown.”
City Council President Tony Dolce, R-Ward II, recognized Carrubba for her years of service.
“Her legal and financial experience and background will be missed,” he said. “I want to thank her for her service to this community and wish her the best moving forward. I know she will continue to serve our community in various capacities on the several boards and commissions of which she is a member.”
Since 1984, Carrubba has been an attorney and executive director of Southwestern Independent Living Center.
