Inmate Charged With Helping Burham Escape From Warren Jail
WARREN, Pa. – An inmate has been charged for his alleged role in assisting Michael Burham’s efforts to escape the Warren County Jail.
And he allegedly claimed that every inmate knew about the “deficiency in the roof” that allowed Burham to flee.
George A. Flasher, 21, was charged with two felony counts – permit/facilitate escape and conspiracy to permit/facilitate escape – by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and City of Warren police on Monday morning.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed Monday with District Judge Raymond Zydonik’s office, police have “reviewed video footage and conducted numerous interviews with correctional officers and other inmates” in the wake of Burham’s July 6 escape from the county jail.
That escape kicked off a 10-day manhunt that brought national and international attention and media coverage.
Police state in the affidavit that Flasher was interviewed by police on July 12, allegedly waiving his rights and agreeing to speak.
Flasher allegedly told police that “Burham approached him and requested his assistance in obtaining bed sheets to enable Burham to escape” and that Flasher “admitted that he calculated the length of rope Burham would need to repel down the outside wall.”
According to the affidavit, Flasher estimated the height of the building and the number of bed sheets that would be needed to make a said rope.
“The bed sheets are six feet long so Flasher stated, at a minimum, Burham would need nine sheets,” the affidavit alleges, “but 10 to 12 sheets would be ideal for extra length and strength of the rope.”
Flasher told police he was able to do the calculations based on knowledge gained from his father’s Florida-based construction company.
“Flasher admitted to providing Burham with two bed sheets,” the affidavit further alleges. “Additionally, Flasher admitted to knowing where Burham kept the ripped sheets in the Warren County Prison.”
Police alleged he made a stunning claim: “Flasher stated that every inmate knew about the deficiency in the roof of the yard where Burham ultimately escaped.”
Police detail in the affidavit that video shows three inmates sitting, speaking to each other while Burham walked around the rec yard.
Approximately 40 minutes later, police detail, Burham “is observed standing on a pull-up bar and exiting the south yard through a hole in the metal, gated roof.
Online court records indicate that Flasher was arraigned at 11:15 a.m. and is being held on $250,000 bail.
Those records also show that Flasher was initially held in the county jail on a sentence stemming from probation violations. His violation hearing was held the day Burham escaped.
