New Owners Continuing Olde Corner Deli Tradition
The new owners of the Olde Corner Deli, Stacie and Roger Klossner, are trying to carry on the legacy of the iconic business in Hartfield.
As the Olde Corner Deli marks its third week of the season, Stacie Klossner said the first weeks of the season have been amazing.
“The people have just been great,” she said. “We’ve been busier than we imagined, and everyone has been patient and understanding as we’re trying to learn. It’s been great, like I can’t say enough good things about it. It’s been a fun experience.”
Asked what made them decide to purchase the business, Klossner explained that her family has owned a business for many years and were looking for a way to “transition” into something “a little bit different.”
“Just wanting to get something a little bit different,” she said. “We have a landscape business, still seasonal, but maybe something that would allow us to do something at some point in time during the winters and things like that.”
In addition to her family’s interest in a new business experience, Klossner said her and her husband have known the previous owners for many years. Despite a transition in ownership this year, Klossner said the Olde Corner Deli will continue to keep things “pretty much the same.” The previous owners left the Klossner family with all of the information and recipes for the business’s famous subs.
“It served them well for 49 years, we wanted to keep going with the same things,” Klossner said.
Asked what people can expect when they visit the Olde Corner Deli, Klossner said she hopes people will find the Olde Corner Deli to be a friendly and welcoming place for people to enjoy “great food” and “good sandwiches. In addition to subs and sandwiches, Klossner said the Olde Corner Deli features a variety of other snacks and beverages for people to enjoy, regardless of the occasion.
“We’re just trying to continue to learn,” she said. “We’re figuring a lot of stuff out. We were not in the food service business before, so we’re still learning, we’re still training our staff. Our hope and desire is just to provide the same things people loved about the Old Corner Deli, but taking a good thing and making it better and just giving people a great experience, good food and some different options for snacks and beverages and desserts and things like that, but really just wanting to be a part of the community and have a place where people can come and grab lunch or dinner or whatever they might be interested in.”
Klossner told The Post-Journal that her husband’s family has known the original owners of the Olde Corner Deli since the business opened in Hartfield in 1973. As a result, the Klossner family knew that they were purchasing a “great business” that was well-established in the region.
Asked about the importance of the historical side of the Olde Corner Deli, Klossner said, “We think it’s huge. This is actually the 50th season in September. That’s part of what we’ve sort of enjoyed about it. It’s been a business that’s been in operation, so we weren’t starting from scratch. The nostalgia of it and the history is important to us. We wanted to carry that on. That’s why we really didn’t want to change anything about it.”
Klossner described the Olde Corner Deli as an “icon” in the community that everyone looks forward to in the spring. She added that the Olde Corner Deli has been a “summer staple” in the region for many years.
While the Klossner family is striving to honor the legacy of the Olde Corner Deli and keep most aspects of the business the same, Klossner said there have been a few small changes implemented in order to provide additional options for customers.
“There’s a few extras and stuff like that that we’ve added as options for the sub, but we’re still roasting our own roast beef that they’ve done for years,” she said. “We get fresh rolls from a bakery in Jamestown every day Monday through Friday. We’re just trying to keep as much the same because it’s been what people are looking for and they enjoy it as it is.”
The Olde Corner Deli is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Olde Corner Deli is closed on Sundays.
With the support and loyal business of the local community, Klossner said the whole experience owning and reopening the Olde Corner Deli for its 50th year has been wonderful so far.
