Student Who Approached School With Gun Prompts ‘Rapid’ Response
First responders surrounded a Jamestown elementary school Monday afternoon after a 12-year-old student requesting help disclosed she had a handgun.
No one was injured, and the Jamestown Police Department said charges were pending against the juvenile.
At 3:08 p.m., police received a call from staff at Fletcher Elementary School, 301 Cole Ave., stating that a girl was on school grounds and reported to be in possession of a weapon. The call prompted a large response including police and firefighters to the school.
In a news release, Jamestown police said the student — who did not attend Fletcher — was located in an office speaking to a faculty member. Police were able to “safely secure the weapon from the student without incident,” JPD said.
The 12-year-old was later transported to UPMC Chautauqua for an evaluation.
Jamestown Public Schools, in its own statement released around 5 p.m., said the student approached a staff member outside the school’s entrance after classes had been dismissed for the day. The student was “seeking assistance and disclosed that she was in possession of a handgun and requested help.”
Fletcher’s principal called 911 after being notified; staff and students still in the school were moved to a “safe location.’
“The principal made the decision to secure the student in a location away from students and staff,” the district said.
JPS added, “We are thankful for the rapid and immediate response of our local law enforcement agency. Student safety remains our top priority and we will always keep our school community informed.”
