Fire Claims Life: Occupant Dies In Gerry House Blaze
GERRY — One woman died after a fire broke out early Wednesday.
Volunteer firefighters from several departments were called to 4532 Route 60 near Church Street in downtown Gerry. The blaze was reportedly called in by a passerby around 3:40 a.m.
According to the Gerry Fire Department, the home was fully engulfed in flames when fire officials arrived. In addition to Gerry, firefighters from Sinclairville, Falconer, Ellington, Ellery Center, Kennedy, Fluvanna, Stockton and Frewsburg, among others, responded early Wednesday.
An initial report to Chautauqua County 911 indicated a person may have been trapped inside the property. Deputies later confirmed the victim as Sally Wissman.
County fire investigators were called to the scene and the cause remains under investigation.
According to the Gerry Fire Department, the blaze went through the roof of the home. Significant damage to the upper floor of the home was visible.
By mid-morning, a sheriff’s patrol vehicle could still be seen at the property.
Route 60 was closed to traffic from Sinclair Drive to Salisbury Road for several hours. The road was reopened around 9 a.m.
